Rival Sons - Great Western Valkyries - 2LP -

Price per Unit (stuk): €15.95

Having grown up in the 70's and 80's, this album fires on all cylinders for me. If you have never heard of Rival Sons, do yourself a favor and get this release. The whole album is soaked in a nostalgic sound that evokes comparisons to the Doors, Led Zeppelin and The Animals. From the opening riff, you are placed on familiar but fresh musical ground. The singer is a cross between Jim Morrison and Robert Plant. His vocal phrasings and whisky blues soulful vocals (reminiscent of Morrison) is what pushes these songs over the top and make them instant classics. His range is that of a Robert Plant. He's the best singer to arrive on the scene since Chris Cornell with a similar power and ferocity that stuns you upon first listen. His lyrics are also top notch and delivered with conviction and passion.

The guitar is mostly just big gigantic riffs which the songs revolve around (with not many chords making up the meat of about half of the songs) heavily colored with fuzz pedals and wah wah effects...similar to how the Edge plays. It's evident that the guitarist was heavily influenced by Jimmy Page (a good thing). The bass playing is awesome, and the drummer has a John Bonham thing going on which adds to the nostalgic feel that runs through all of the tunes. Keyboards are also very tastefully done. They don't overtake any of the songs, but embellish them by adding color. There is a freshness and spark to the songs that give them a magical type quality when the music is coming out of your speakers.

The quality of the songs and the song writing are fantastic!

The album doesn't have a dud on it. You can play it straight from beginning to end without wanting to skip anything. My favorites are "Good Luck", "Good Things", "Open My Eyes", and "Electric Man". These are an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. The others come in at 9's or 10's.

I'm a bit surprised that this band is not more well known yet, but hopefully that will change after this release. If you are a classic rock, or rock fan, you will enjoy the heck out of this!!
